Recognising the community’s concerns with safety along the black length of Nepean Highway in Mount Eliza, I have been working hard to deliver a solution for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

I am delighted that after securing $400,000 from the Australian Government for safety upgrades, construction of the project is expected to begin in October and be completed by the end of the year.

The construction contract will be awarded and announced in coming weeks.

The works to be funded by the Australian Government include the construction of a pedestrian operated signal crossing north of the Tower Road intersection, installation of vehicle detector loops on Tower Road and a green coloured surface treatment for the bicycle lanes to improve safety for all road users.

I would like to thank Mornington Peninsula Shire Council for its commitment to this project, including its $100,000 contribution. The funding brings the project total to $500,000 and will pay for new footpaths, curb and channelling, and a bus shelter relocation.

This project shows that by working together, the Australian Government and local government are delivering important road safety improvement projects for the local community.

Safety upgrades to this stretch of road are badly needed- it has high pedestrian usage and a poor crash record, with 13 crashes between January 2009 and December 2013 causing two fatalities and two serious injuries.

This project will make the road safer for motorists, for cyclists to navigate and for pedestrians to cross, especially near the bus stop.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council in conjunction with Vic Roads will manage the works and every effort will be made to minimise disruption during the construction phase.

This project is one of a number I have worked with local government and the community on to improve safety on our roads.
