Thursday 9 April 2015:

Mornington village will soon be safer, with work finally underway to expand the Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) network and street lighting in local laneways.

Seven key laneways connecting Mornington Main Street with car parks have been targeted with improved lighting, a technology upgrade and expansion of the commercial centre’s CCTV system.

The project is being funded with a $400,000 Commonwealth Government grant to improve public safety and the personal security of employees and customers.

The grant is from the Abbott Government’s Safer Streets Programme and is part of my $759,000 election commitment to fight crime, improve personal security and combat anti-social behaviour in Dunkley.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council staff and its contractors are managing the work, which so far includes the installation of infrastructure like conduits to power the new lighting and CCTV cameras.

The council has completed installation of the infrastructure in Laneway One and is now moving sequentially through each of the other laneways. Once this process is complete, the CCTV and lighting will be installed.

I inspected the work earlier this week with President of the Mornington Chamber of Commerce Judy Edwards and share the chamber’s delight that work is now underway.

Resolving issues associated with the transfer of the existing CCTV network from the chamber to council control, energy billing disputes and grant conditions have combined to produce frustrating project delays- so I am relieved that we are now seeing action.

The welcoming seaside village atmosphere is a real strength of Mornington’s commercial centre.

This initiative aims to ensure this appeal is sustained and enhanced with business owners, staff and patrons all feeling safe whether involved in shopping, dining or night-clubbing- and as Main Street and adjacent areas take on a different character and complexion at different times of the day and week.

I have worked closely with the chamber of commerce, local police, council and local community groups to identify the areas most in need of this amenity-enhancing investment and want it to be in place as soon as possible.
