Mt Eliza and Frankston Sth next to get NBN as rollout speeds up

Wednesday 18 March 2015:

Around 5,400 homes and businesses in Mount Eliza and part of Frankston South are next in the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Dunkley, with build preparation work now underway.

This is a significant step forward, and includes premises in Mount Eliza, South of Mount Eliza Village, and Frankston South from Sweetwater Creek to Humphries Road including parts of Overport Road.

In coming weeks, work will be visible in streets in these areas as pre-construction activity begins, such as the clearing of Telstra’s pits and ducts.

The announcement brings the total superfast broadband connections under construction in Dunkley to17, 400. 8,800 premises in the Karingal area and a small part of Frankston are already able to connect. Other parts of Frankston, Baxter and Mornington are due to have work commence by the middle 2016.

I am encouraged that the rollout is speeding up, and I will keep making the call for progress to meet the needs of our community.

I have seen firsthand the communications issues within the electorate, and have highlighted areas of pressing need. This includes neighbourhoods with poor or no broadband service and commercial areas, because businesses rely on up to date technology to be competitive and succeed.

The Coalition Government’s work is in contrast to the previous Labor Government, where rollout was expensive, occurred at a glacial pace and seemed to commence in areas where adequate broadband was already available.

I am also heartened to see that more residents and businesses are taking advantage of all the benefits NBN has to offer, with around 300 premises connecting over the past three weeks. However, there are thousands more connections available.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull the announcement of NBN Co’s new construction schedule was delivering on the Government’s promise to get the NBN rollout back on track.

“When we came into Government, one of our chief priorities has been to get this rollout done sooner, cheaper for taxpayers and more affordably for consumers,” Mr Turnbull said.
